Dual Booting - Ubuntu on Windows 7

Ubuntu is one of the best choices for a worry-free operating system. It is open source, and there are literally applications for everything you could ever want to do. Think of it like an iPhone without the need to pay for things. Also, there are no viruses to worry about. This is the number one reason to use Ubuntu over the standard Win7 interface. If you are thinking of purchasing a Windows 7 Ultrabook with a Newegg coupon or from your local Best Buy store, Ubuntu should be your very next move.

Once you have loaded your Ultrabook and connected to the Internet, you're ready to go. Follow these steps to break free from Win 7.

1. Log into Ubuntu website at http://www.ubuntu.com/

This is the only place to go to get the Ubuntu download. Ubuntu is completely free. If you have come across Ubuntu on a Warez or file sharing site that wants you to purchase access, don't do it. Get the safe Ubuntu download directly from the source.

2. Once you've made it to the Ubuntu site, click on the "Downloads" tag in the navigation bar at the top of the screen.

3. The next screen will give you the option to choose a server, desktop or cloud version. Choose the "Desktop Version" tab; it is the compatible version for Ultrabooks.

4. At the top of the page, you can choose either the 32-bit or 64-bit version. For the Ultrabook, choose the 64-bit version, then click the "Download Windows Installer."

5. Save the wubi.exe file directly to your desktop. It will come from the ubuntu.virginmedia.com site. If this isn't the path that comes up, abort the connection because you have been redirected to an unauthorized site.

6. Once the download has completed, click on the Ubuntu icon on the desktop and choose run.

7. The interface will open and allow you to choose the size of memory for your dual-boot -- you can max this out at 30 GB.

8. Also, choose a user name and password and then click install. Depending on the size of your memory allocation and the speed of your processor, this could take several minutes.

9. When the set-up wizard finishes reboot your Windows 7 Ultrabook.

10. The Ubuntu splash screen will load after the reboot. This is normal as it is finishing the installation. This is the only time the splash screen will come up after a reboot.

11. Each time you restart or reboot the computer you will have the choice to load the computer in Windows 7 or Ubuntu.

That's it, you're done. You now have one of the most cost effective, worry-free operating systems on the planet in one of the sleekest, lightest portable computing systems you can buy. It also isn't bogged down with trail ware or unnecessary background programs so it will load up fast. You'll never have to worry about viruses or your system not being compatible with existing hardware. The global team of experts, who build and maintain Ubuntu, update and test the system daily.

USB Errors: Fix the USB device not recognized error in Windows 8

If your PC does not recognize the USB devices plugged into it, use this guide to resolve the issue

USB devices stop working, and even they are perfectly fine, they would just not get detected by Windows. This is the problem in all stable versions of Windows including the Consumer Preview version of Windows 8. USB device not recognized is a very common issue and takes place when mostly the device driver is either not installed, or not detected properly by the system. All of a sudden the USB ports would stop working, even if the USB devices would work fine on other systems. In order to get rid of this problem, it is important you follow the following methods:
First method: Turn off your system, unplug the power cord of your PC and/or unplug the battery of your system. Now wait for about 45 minutes before reinstalling the battery and plugging in the power supply of your PC. Restart your system and the problem shall go away.
I do not know the logic behind this solution, but I do know that it works. The cache memory gets cleared once the system is unplugged from the power supply. In case this does not work for you, try the following steps:
1. Go to Windows Explorer and right click on Computer to go to Manage.
2. Click Device Manager and select Universal Serial Bus Controllers from the right side.
3. You have to manually uninstall all USB drivers like shown below, and then restart your system:
4. Now restart your system and let it automatically detect and install the plugged hardware devices. In case it doesn’t. you need to follow the same steps and instead of selecting Uninstall from the list, you would select Scan for hardware changes as shown below:

Conclusion

This should solve the problem.

INSTALL WINDOWS 8 VIA USB DRIVE

Microsoft has just released a developer preview of its new operating system Windows 8. Users can now download the preview and install on their system to see how its works. But there is just one problem and that is you can't update an existing version of windows, it requires a clean installation.

It is a straight forward process when installing it with a CD/DVD Drive but if you're like me that has a 10inch notebook which doesn't come with a DVD drive then the only solution is to install via a USB stick or drive.

Installing Windows 8 from a USB drive is not that friendly because it requires more preparation that just burning an ISO image to disk and putting that ISO into the DVD drive of the computer.

You will need at least four Gigabytes free space of USB drive, which you have to first format with the FAT32 file system. This is done by connecting the USB drive to the company, right click its drive letter and select Format from the options. The Format windows pops up where you need to make sure that FAT32 is the selected file system. Everything else can be left as they are.

After the formatting is finished, you will need access to the Windows 8 ISO or DVD. The developer preview is only provided as an ISO image.

The easiest way to copy Windows 8 to an USB drive and make that drive bootable at the same time is to use Microsoft’s Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. While designed specifically for Windows 7, it appears to work just fine to create a bootable Windows 8 USB key as well.
Just select the Windows 8 ISO when asked to pick an ISO image from the computer. Then select to copy the contents to an USB drive. The program will copy all files to the drive and make that drive bootable at the same time. You can download the Microsoft tool from here.

Install Windows 8

You plug in your USB key into the computer you want to install Windows 8 on. You need to tell the computer on first start to boot from USB and not from hard drive or another location. This is done in the Bios. You usually enter the Bios with F1, F1, Delete, Esc or another key that is highlighted on the screen on Post. Press that key and look for an entry that says Boot or Boot order and make sure that USB has the highest priority on the system. You can easily repeat the steps if the computer is not booting from USB.

The computer should pick up the installation files on the USB drive automatically and installation should commence.

Windows 8 has the following system requirements:

  • 1 Gigahertz or faster 32-bit or 64-bit processor
  • 1 Gigabyte of RAM for 32-bit, 2 Gigabytes of RAM for 64-bit minimum
  • 16 Gigabyte hard drive for 32-bit systems, 20 Gigabyte for 64-bit systems
  • Direct X 9 graphics card
Note: It is also possible to install Windows 8 by mounting the ISO image directly on another Windows system. The instructions have been posted on Reddit.

If you want to install the Windows Developer Preview, but have no blank DVDs or usable thumb drives, fear not. It’s fairly simple. This assumes you are installing the preview on a computer already running Windows, of course.

  • Download the ISO file from Microsoft.
  • Mount the ISO using Daemon Tools, Clone Drive, or similar.
  • This is important. Do not use the autorun installer. The autorun installer only allows you to upgrade your existing Windows installation and will not allow you to install to a separate hard drive or partition.
  • Navigate to the virtual install disc and go to the folder called “sources”.
  • Run setup.exe and proceed as if installing Windows Vista or 7.

DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE MICROSOFT WINDOWS 8 RELEASE PREVIEW

Get ready, beta testers. Microsoft debuted Windows 8 Release Preview, which is one of the last steps before a final release of Windows 8 this fall. Versions of the operating system are available for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

Here's what Microsoft says is new or enhanced over previous beta releases:

  • New Bing-powered apps, including ones for travel, news, and sports
  • Improvements to Mail, Photos, and People apps
  • Increased Start personalization
  • Better multiple-monitor support
  • Better Windows Store navigation
  • New family safety and security functionality
  • Enhanced touch support for Internet Explorer 10
Warning

As with past betas of Windows 8, Microsoft advises users to not install the operating system on a computer used for day-to-day work. There's also no going back without wiping your hard drive.
You can't downgrade from Windows 8 since it cannot access the recovery partition of your hard drive. If you need to downgrade, ensure you have recovery disks readily available.

f you are already running Windows 8 Consumer Preview or Developer Preview, Microsoft says you can upgrade to Release Preview. There's a downside to upgrading, though: you cannot keep any of your files.

To run Windows 8 Release Preview, your test computer will need a processor with a clock speed of 1GHz or greater, 1GB (32-bit version), or 2GB (64-bit version) of RAM, at least 16GB (32-bit) or 20GB (64-bit) of available hard drive space, and a graphics card that supports DirectX 9 with a WDDM driver.

For select features, you will also need multitouch support, Internet access, and a screen resolution of at least 1024 pixels by 768 pixels.

Where to Download Windows 8 Release Preview

If you meet these requirements, head over to the download page on Microsoft's site and enter your email and country. Since the free Release Preview is available in 14 languages, chances are you'll find a version of the software available for your region.

Clicking 'Download' will start the download of the "Windows 8 Release Preview Setup." Running this application automates most of the set-up process, and selects the appropriate version of the preview for your machine. If you're a bit more daring and technologically savvy, Microsoft has provided direct links to ISO files.

These must be turned into installation media that are burned to a DVD drive or copied to a USB flash drive in order to complete the install. That's the installation process in a nutshell, but again--be wary. This is preview software, so keep mission critical work off your test PC.
